Describe a challenge faced by an individual and how the author uses language features to emphasise this challenge and the theme of perseverance and survival.
A challenged faced by an individual in the novel written by Barry crump “wild pork and watercress” was when Ricky baker first first went bush. The Story is seen from Ricky baker’s narrative point of view, Ricky is a troubled young fat Maori boy without parents. This challenge helps me understand that Ricky is a persevering independent young man who exceeded his own expectations and was able to survive numerous several life threatening situations in the bush such as helping uncle hec, hunting for food, keeping hidden for searchers, and getting over physical challenges of being “fat Maori Boy”.
In the Novel “wild pork and watercress” The narrative point of view is seen from a young fat troubled Maori boy named Ricky baker. Ricky’s parents didn’t care much to take care of him, as his dad is in jail and mum unable to look after him. Ricky also faced racial profiling and and typical stereotypes towards him However while everyone thinks that he is stupid is actually a smart kid and was the best at reading in his class. He is still a tennager with a classic kiwi and maori humour which is shown in the speech he uses. with ricky telling us the story we can get an inside view of ricky’s emotions and that he is actually a smart kid and isn’t what people label him. ” by the time id been at school I was reading miles better then most kids but I wasn’t much good at anything else, and they decided i was slow learner. They shifted me around from class to class, trying to work out where fat Maori boys who can’t play rugby or learn simple stuff fitted in.” This shows how the perspective of Ricky sees the society and how he feels about society. with ricky’s narrative it adds humour but also emotion and kiwi New Zealand feel to how the story. In my opinion Ricky’s wit and humour adds a great Kiwi feel to the story and a nice insight on how he views the people around and what’s going on his life. It gives you understanding of how ricky feels and how his touts change is he moves out on the farm and enters into the bush.
