ShawShank essay
The film ShawShank redemption directed by Frank Darabont is a drama/crime based film which shows us the story Andy Dufresne. Andy is a well educated bank accountant who gets wrongfully accused for the murder of his wife and her secret lover and sent to two lifetime sentences in shawshank prison. In this film there are 3 major aspects Frank Darabont demonstrated through Andy and his friends they are hope, redemption and cell inmates becoming institutionalized. I believe this film delivers a positive message to the viewers such as hope, Redemption and gives an insight to a corrupt system and harsh prison life.
In the film “Shawshank redemption” directed by Frank Darabont one of the biggest and most important messages in the film is hope. Frank Darabont uses lighting techniques to show and demonstrate hope in many scenes throughout the film. When a character is placed into the natural light or seen with natural background lighting it gives the audience a sense of hope, compared to when character is placed in darkness showing they have no hope. For example this is shown when Brooks is released on parole in contrast to reds release on parole. When Brooks is released the directer has dark cloud and the natural lighting is dark and dull, this is to represent that brooks has no hope outside the walls of Shawshank prison. When Red is released the sky is clear and the sun is shining, the lighting used is much brighter which represents the hope that red still has unlike Brooks had. This is a great example of natural lighting. Dialogue is also an important way Frank Darabont showed hope throughout the film. “get busy living or get busy dying” is a saying told by Andy when speaking to Red. This shows how Andy still has hope and is trying to keep Red filled with hope. Andy is implying how Brooks “got busy dying” because he lost hope and decided to give up on life. Brooks had given up hope because ad no reason for living anymore. Andy is trying to stop Red from traveling down the same route. “get busy living” is what Andy is trying to get into Red, stop Red from following brooks’s path, Andy has given red hope and a reason to live. “Only one thing stops me. A promise I made to Andy” This shows how Andy was the guide light of hope for Red and without him Red may have took his own life. I believe Andy knew how Red was starting to become institutionalized in Shawshank but the Hope Andy gave saved his life. I believe this can teach us how we should always lookout for our friends and try to understand how there feeling and to give them a helping hand. As well as how much prison life can effect someones mental state and emotions; they start to become institutionalized they will lose more hope as each continuous day passes.
In the film” Shawshank” redemption Directed by Frank Darabont A huge problem represented in the film is prisoners becoming Institutionalized. After spending enough of your life in prison, a person will unconsciously put their mind and body into a set routine for everyday life. They start to become comfortable in prison and think of it as their “home”. So when a prisoner is released on parole they are pulled out of there usually life and routine that they had in prions. Being away from home (prison) is scary and they are unable to handle life outside they’re grey concrete walls and breakdown with their life and mind now in shambles. One perfect example of this is shown in ShawShank, the high security prison with a corrupt warden, Brooks Hatlin is a man that was heavily institutionalized. Brooks was serving a life sentence and spent over 50 years in Shawshank prison. And when released on parole took his own life. “I saw an automobile once when I was a kid, but now they’re everywhere” this shows how large of an effect a life scentance in prison can have someone and change their life forever. Brooks was old and spent majority of his life accustomed, surrounded in dull, grey concrete walls. On parole Brooks fearful and missed his “home” inside large walls and cell bars. “I don’t like it here, I’m tired of being afraid”, this is what what is going through Brooks’s mind while he sleeps during his time on Parole. It shows how Brooks feels being away from his domestic life in prison. Coming out of the life hes known for so long and back into A completely different way of life and community was too much for Brooks to handle, and took his own life. This can relate back into the real world institutions, school is another system in which spend their life set in an everyday routine. Students are placed in school to be educated, modern education requires the act or process of imparting the knowledge about our present world and society . The school system does not prepare students for life after school , instead the students become set in a system where they are to copy information an write it down into a test instead of helping them with creative thinking and teaching them how take in information. Students instead become institutionalized as they are set in a routine they have followed almost all there life. I believe we should learn from Brooks’ is story an somehow shape education in way that isn’t institutionalized and prepares young children for the outside world.
Another important message in the film “ShawShank Redemption” directed by Frank Darabont is Redemption. Redemption is the action of being saved from a sin or evil deed. Despite Andy deffresne being innocent him being placed in prison he is now just as guilty as everyone else. Andy is (as the protagonist) goes through the largest act of redemption. ” On the outside I was a straight and honest man, I had to come to prison to be a crook” Andy says showing us how he has become as guilty as his inmates, and how much his time imprison has started to change him. Andy always has good heart, but his life has now hit a major obstacle in the way, and for 20 years in prison he was survived and work towards redemption, by using clever tricks and having an amazing work ethic to strive for his goal, freedom. ” Andy diffresne crawled through a river of shit and came through clean on the other side” Red says this this about Andy, and is referring to Andy escaping by crawling through the sewage drain pipe and into the river were all the dirt and shit was cleaned off of him. However I see a deeper meaning to this as metaphor to the events that have happened in the past 20 years. The river of shit representing him being wrongly accused of being guilty and having to spend many miserable and hard years in prison. Andy escaping through into the river and coming clean on the other side is referring to redemption. Redemption, is what Andy was striving for and he cam out of the drain of shit in the the clean river not only was the muck cleaned of him he was also cleaned and redeemed of any sins he has committed in the past and has come out a new man. I think the people of the modern world can learn a lot through Andy’s redemption, by knowing that no matter what wall we come against or sins we have committed in the past, we should work for redemption. As red says “time and pressure” along with hard work is it all takes to help wash away our sins of the past or a tough challenge when life is unfair.
In conclusion I believe Frank Darabont showed the messages if hope, institutionalized and Redemption very well through out the film. Different dialogue and lightnings techniques to effectively show these 3 key aspects continuously throughout the film. The story of Andy Deffresne and his new life and friends and in prison is one which we should learn from. That just like Andy when life hits us with a completely unfair and unjust wall or task we need to try our best to over come it and come through the other sides cleaned and redeemed. I believe the film “shawshank redemption” is clever and superbly directed film with important key messages that the viewers can take away.
