Dark knight essay

In the Film ” The Dark Knight” directed by Christopher Nolan I will be analyzing the scene of Joker’s “social experiment” and the techniques used in the scene. Christoper Nolan uses a range of techniques such as lighting, dialogue and the sound used for the Joker. Christopher Nolan uses these to build suspense throughout the scene. The Joker is smart character who is quite a quirky criminal who’s only desire is to show that civilians are out for themselves and the government system is corrupt.

In the film “The Dark knight” directed by Christopher Nolan, one technique used to build suspense is the lighting. Christopher Nolan uses different techniques in the film to show the good and bad side of a character. An example of great lighting used by the director is seen towards the end of scene when the Joker is hanging upside down. The lighting technique is not used often but Christopher Nolan uses it very well. While the Joker is hanging upside the lighting used is spotlight shone on him which he swings in and out of. This light techniques is used to show that the Joker isn’t an ordinary criminal. Christopher Nolan breaks through the lighting conventions. He doesn’t following the rules of lighting that are used when filming. He uses this lighting technique on the Joker to how the joker also doesn’t follow the rules. the joker doesn’t follow the typical way a criminal does things. So by breaking the lighting conventions when filing the Joker hanging upside down he also is representing how the Joker breaks the the typical conventions of a criminal. The light represents his good side; he doesn’t desire money fame or power, he just wants prove his belief that the government has become corrupt and that everyone is only out for themselves, The dark light shows how he wants chaos and uses people and psychotic ways of causing innocent people to die. Christopher Nolan shows the viewer how the joker is unpredictable and not your typical bad guy. The Joker wants chaos and people start disrespecting the law. This same thing has happened in other countries. Pakistan used to be very safe countries where everyone obeyed the law, due to terrorist attacks and a corrupt system Pakistan is now a dangerous country and re not allowed to have home sports games. I believe people can learn to be good civilians and respect the law as well as to each other this way the future will follow the same fate as Pakistan or follow the jokers wishes.

In the film “the Dark knight” Directed by Christopher Nolan dialogue is used to give a greater understanding of the characters. the Joker character is a complex and sophisticated character with intentions of chaos. The Jokers objective is to prove that the people of gotham city are only out for themselves, that if necessary they kill others in order to benefit themselves. “So who’s it gonna be? Harvey-dent’s most wanted scumbag collection or the sweet and innocent civilians? You chose” this shows the audience how the joker uses large scale “experiments” to try to prove his point that everyone in gotham is out for themselves. The Joker is a maniac who wants to prove that gotham is corrupt and wants to see anarchy and chaos. In jokers experiments there a two boats “spirit” which is filled with prisoners and “liberty” which is filled with innocent civilians each given the detonator to the other boats bombs which are planted around the boats. One of the biggest sinister looking prisoners walks up the warden and says.”give to me, and show what you shoulda did 10 minutes ago, give me” the warden then gives the prisoner the detonator which he then immediately throws out the window of the boat. This dialogue is used to make the audience think that the prisoner is gonna blow up the boat and Joker will have proven his point. However the prisoner proves Joker wrong and shows that even though he is a criminal doesn’t wish to give into the jokers objective and shows that gotham is still has hope. I believe this shows that in the real world we should always put others before ourselves and not to harm or kill innocent people . By doing this I believe community can stay peaceful and friendly.

In the film ” The Dark Knight” the director, Christopher Nolan, uses sounds to give the audience different emotions and feelings. Music and sound can have a great impact on the scene and can make the viewer feel different emotions such as sad, angry or happy. In this scene Christopher Nolan uses a shotgun going off to cause a sense of panic in the film as well as in the audience. A gunshot is very loud noise which usually indicates action to death in a film, something as loud as a gunshot. The gun shot is set off just as the joker finishes his explaining his experiment so with that still in the audience’s mind, the gun shot then further enhances their sense of panic adding great emotion and feel to the scene. It sets the atmosphere in the film and the audience that something is gonna happen and there is chaos starting form, which is the Joker’s objective. The sense of panic set off by the shotgun can maybe let the audience know a slight feeling of What they they think a gun fight or war might be like. In a war if a strategy where to go wrong and shotgunned was fired everyone in the area would set into an immediate state of panic. Christopher Nolan then gives this feeling to the audience and is a great way to have the viewers at the edge of their sets and be hit with rush of adrenaline while watching this film. Background music is another technique used build suspense and make the viewer feel emotion and panic. In the moments where the people on the ships discovers it is rigged with bombs and the Joker explanation, deep slow and ominous music is played, and a very slow pace. This is used to build suspense and makes the view feel as if something is about to happen and will build to a climax in the film. After the Joker has finished speaking, the music suddenly starts to increase in pace to a climax. BY changing the pace in music form low to high the film can make the viewer feel suspense and get there heart racing, as the begin to unconsciously start to get nervous that something big is about to happen. In my opinion believe Christopher Nolan could not have used or timed this gun shot any better and gave the scene much more emotion, results it being much more enjoyable. He also used a change in pace with the music which helps build suspense and have the viewer on the edge of their seat. It allowed the audience to understand pressure and panic of the situation.

In conclusion I believe Christopher Nolan uses different filming techniques very well to give the audience a greater understanding of the Joker and his intentions with Gotham city. The lighting and dialogue are used very show the audience the Joker is not a typical criminal and how is trying to prove the Gotham is corrupt. The sound is used very efficiently to give the audience feeling and make the scene more intense. All of these are used to show the jokers feeling and what he is trying to get out of Gotham city.

  1. Rhys your paragraph on lighting is a bit weak. Christopher Nolan breaks lighting conventions to reinforce that the Joker doesn’t follow the rules. Link that back to the importance of order and the joker’s motive.

  2. Make sure you always give the Joker a capital J. Still a few grammatical and spelling errors to fix.

Why are the boats called Spirit and Liberty – could be worth explaining this.

How is the prisoner a symbol of the redemption of the city? Explain?

You could add depth to your sound effects paragraph by delving into the music used. How does this build suspense?

Is there anything we can learn from this scene and the theme of the importance of Law and Order to society.
