33 men

33 men, written by Jonathan franklin he went to chile and reported on the events that unfolded there. 33 men is a non-fictional book that narrates the unbelievable rescue of 33 men in the san Jose mine in Chile. The story gives many emotions to the reader, such as panic, anger, depression, hope along with a new sense of passion for mine and miners across the globe. The book talks about 33 miners along with their struggles, emotions, ups, and downs, that all the trapped miners had to go through.

I believe that other students in yr 11 12 and 13 would enjoy this book because it shows how determination, hard work, teamwork, and resilience will always give you the best results in life. In the case of the minor, their reward for never giving up was freedom from the entrapment 2,300 ft underground in the San Jose mine.  The minors of san Jose mine all prepared for another normal day at the in the mine, then on August 5th, 2010, the mine suddenly collapsed at around 1,500 ft underground. This left 33 Chilean miners stuck underground in a refugee 2,300 meters deep. This can relate to years 11 12 and 13s because being suddenly faced with a giant impossible task is sometimes what it may feel like in the senior years of school. Just as the minors prepared to too to work for another normal day school students go to school in morning just like any other day, when suddenly are told that the have an internal which almost seems impossible to pass. That feeling, although on a lower scale, can maybe relate to how the minors felt when there were trapped and it seemed almost impossible to survive. So this is one part of how the minors being trapped can be related to years 11 12 and 13 students.

I found that one of the key themes in “33 men” that students of mount aspiring college who compete in sport are determination. Determination is a firmness of purpose to achieve a goal. The 33 miners stuck in side the collapsed mine of San Jose had a goal. Their goal was to survive. Through months of pain and suffering and as well as hard work the minors managed to achieve their goals and were rescued from the mine. Many athletes can relate to wanting to achieve a goal that takes time and hard work. For example, an athlete may have a song goal that may take several months, weather that be lost or gain wait or become fit. So athletes or sportsman or even anyone with a goal that they are passionate about can relate to the minors and their determination. The 33 men trapped inside the San Jose mine never gave up and showed incredible determination to stay alive despite being deprived of hunger only eating a teaspoon of tuna and a couple gulps of water every 36 hours. Their story is one that can inspire people and athletes, such as myself, to never give up on our goal and show us that as long as we don’t give up and try our best we will be able to achieve our greatly desired goals. In my opinion, I believe that young athletes, students, and anyone can be inspired by reading and understanding the events and story of the 33 men and the determination they had to of survived months underground of the collapse of san Jose mine.

In the text “33 men” written by Jonathan franklin a relatable character is Mario Sepulveda.

Sepulveda had “trademark enthusiasm without betraying the miner hierarchy”. Sepulveda positive energy and enthusiasm kept the minors in good Spirits. He was religious and always stayed positive, always looking at the funny or bright side of things.  This positivity is something I can relate with because me myself always tries to stay positive and just enjoy myself whatever I am doing. “He had never failed to of humor to guide the group” is what is said in the book. This shows how Sepulveda’s personality and humor allowed him to lead the men and keep them having hope. He kept them away from depression.despite the burden of leadership he had for 69 days Mario stayed true to god and had a good sense of group dynamics and knowing when to be physically threatening and when not too. I personally believe that humor can help any awkward, or struggling situation, which is why I think Mario Sepulveda was the most important man down in the mine, as he kept everyone sane and in good spirits, which can played a huge part in the men’s survival. I relate to this character through his personality trait of always staying positive.

In the book “33 men” health and safety were a large issue that affected the collapse of the San Jose mine. Health and safety in a mine are put in place to protect minors from any dangerous rock falls or cave-ins and allows them to escape successfully and safely. Things like hard helmets are also used to protect the mine. People in New Zealand can relate to a large mine disaster. The pike river mine collapsed that occurred on November 19th, 2010, which took the lives of 29 minors. So The people of New Zealand have felt a similar and related experience with mince collapses. The only difference was that the pike river miners weren’t able to be rescued in time. This is an example of how health and safety in mines need to be more prioritized to ensure that no disasters like these occur. The author wrote that “ the san Jose mine was the most dangerous mine in the region” this is even before the collapse. This shows how people knew how dangerous the mine was along with owners of the mine. It shows the lack of responsibility from the owners for the employee who works in the mine. And to the families of these were killed or injured during the mine explosion and cave-in at the pike river mine, this book might give and insight into ho your loved ones may have been feeling and what they might have been thing while stuck in the mine. It can maybe give some love ones closure and something to relate to as well. This another reason why I would recommend this book to New Zealanders who maybe work in mines or effected or have connections with them.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend this book to students in their senior year as well as New Zealanders who have connections to mines. This book shows determination to never give up on your goal, no matter what that goal may be. It shows how sometimes life might hit us with and seemingly impossible pass but if we can push through it things will get better. The man Mario Sepulveda demonstrates how a positive attitude and humor can lift those people around us and make them feel happy and give them good spirits when they may be feeling down. It can also provide closure for these New Zealanders were affected by the pike river mine. Hopefully from the darkness of the mine collapse a light a come, in that now mine owners and designers will improve the health and safety of this mine so that these disasters won’t happen again. That is why I would recommend this book to senior students and Newz leaders with connections to the mine.
